Position: Toponymist/Linguist/Geonames Specialist

Description:
The Toponymist shall analyze information associated with feature data listed in the Geographic Names Database (GNDB) while working closely with Intelligence Community (IC) geographic names experts.

Duties: The Analyst / Linguist will analyze and conflate information associate with the feature data within the Geographic Names Database (GNDB). Using government guidance and policies, will respond to questions concerning the proper and correct usage of names, various Romanization systems, and the treatment of descriptive information on standard products. The Analyst / Linguist shall use the Geographic Names Processing Systems (GNPS), charts, imagery, source information in Romanized and native text, and geospatial tools to refine names information for use in all types of products and to respond to use question via the Ad Hoc Query process.

Qualifications:

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Active Top Secret/SCI security clearance required. Applicants selected will be subject to a government security investigation and may need to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information; Top Secret clearance is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree and 1+ years as an Apprentice, 3+ years as a Journeyman, 11+ years as a Senior, and 15+ years as an Expert toponymist. A bachelor’s degree in a GIS, scientific or equivalent discipline is desired.
  • Candidates must have expertise in foreign languages, with at least an IRL or DLPT Reading Skill Level 2 for one of the following languages: Albanian/Serbian; Arabic; Chinese; English; Farsi; French; Greek; Hebrew; Indonesian; Japanese; Korean; Pashto; Russian; Spanish; Thai; Uzbek; or Vietnamese, and the ability to type in native language, and knowledge of basic computer applications.
  • Bachelor’s degree and 5+ years as a toponymist / linguist / Geonames analyst, or HS diploma with five years of related experience, with GIS or related Certification, depending on level of the position.
  • General Knowledge of NGA and the Intelligence Community demonstrated through on-site experience performing duties described above.
  • Experience in research and information gathering.
  • Knowledge of regularly used NGA GEOINT Sources.
  • Experience using ArcGIS or GeoMedia Pro software
  • Experience using common office business software (e.g., Microsoft Office and Internet browsers).
  • Full performance level, minimal oversight, QC without significant errors, collaborate with NGA and IC.
  • Experience with native maps, secondary source maps, historic maps used for extraction and comparison, mapping imagery for stereo and mono extraction at various resolutions.
  • Experience creating shape files, geo-databases, and features including data retrieval/storage.
  • Knowledge of standard NGA products is also necessary to accomplish these services.
  • Desirable skills/experience: specific experience processing geographic names following NGA policies and procedures.
